A sharp increase in the number of deaths in October

According to data released by the Ministry of digital, the number of deaths recorded in October clearly exceeded the average of previous years. Up to 60% die every week in Poland. more people than usual.

During the last month, i.e. October 2020, the number of recorded deaths has definitely increased. In the last week of October, nearly 12,300 deaths were recorded in Poland. In previous years, this figure was much lower. In the same period of the previous year, 7678 people died in Poland, and the year before 7793 people. Very similar statistics were recorded in 2015, when there were 7800 deaths. As you can see, the October statistics are not a slight departure from the long-term average. This year, in the last week of October, more than 4,500 people died, which is almost 60 percent. growth.
For the whole of October, 43,800 people died this year. persons. For comparison, in 2019 there were 31 thousand. deaths in 2018-30,7 thousand., in 2017-30,6 thousand. As you can see, and in these statistics the difference is very large.

In October, 3118 people officially died from covid-19. For comparison, the same disease in March-September died 2513 people. Nevertheless, the difference between all deaths in October this year and the previous years is about 13 thousand. Putting covid deaths into the statistics, it's still about 10,000. more dead than usual.

Among the main reasons is the real collapse of health protection. Ambulances queuing for several hours at Sor, the lack of free emergency teams, or cancelled or postponed diagnostic tests, all this probably had a significant impact on mortality in our country.

Prof. Piotr Szukalski, a demographer from the University of łódź, also gives such reasons for the increased mortality. Subjecting the entire health care system to the fight against covid caused people to die from other diseases. This also shows to some extent the unpreparedness of our system.

Health minister Adam Niedzielski was asked at a conference about such a drastic increase in the number of deaths. He said that the situation is monitored by the National Institute of public health.
- The first conclusions show that we are dealing with an increase in the number of deaths. However, it cannot be clearly attributed to covid-19. They concern a group of people aged 65 plus-said Niedzielski.

The minister noted that the number of deaths began to grow only from September, because by August there were fewer than before. He believes that this is the effect of the spring lockdown, which led to the postponement of other medical benefits.

When we take into account the mortality in the first half of the year, it actually turns out that the mortality in that period was lower. The Polish economic institute reported that in the period from early March to mid-May, the number of deaths could be reduced by about 200 people per week. Less social mobility and, consequently, fewer victims of traffic accidents have been cited as one of the reasons for this.

The current situation in the health care system is considered dramatic, as has been written about many times. The pandemic has only exposed these problems, which unfortunately leads to increased mortality as a result of system failure or malfunctioning.
